It kind of bothers me when people live in nostalgia when it comes to music and movies, saying, “Movies/ music were so much better back then compared to now.” It’s as if there were no bad songs or movies back then. Who remembers MC Hammer’s “Pumps and a Bump”? Ya that came out the same time as 2pac’s “Dear Mama”. Then they say the subject matter is just so dumb and uncreative now, because the “Humpty Dance” or “The Twist” were so different from “The Dougie”. Let’s just pretend Marvin Gaye’s music still isn’t used as “baby-making music” or that the Beatles had no drug references in songs. And then people get upset for people not knowing the Beatles! How’d our generation learn about the Beatles in the first place? Lord knows we never saw them when they first came out. We, more times than not, learned about their music via our parents and the adults around us, so if the younger generation doesn’t know about the Beatles, don’t blame them, blame our generation for not passing their music on. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of the music out on the radio now, I’m not the biggest fan of, but I’m not gunna blame the times for that. I just think it’s the style of music. Not everyone likes jazz or classical music, but we don’t blame the times for that. We just say it’s not our style of music. We can’t blame a kid for not liking the Beatles, nor should we call them ignorant, because they don’t enjoy their style of music. That’s like calling ourselves dumb and ignorant for not knowing the music and history of Beethoven. We’re just not interested. Now if they don’t respect what previous musicians did for music, that’s a different story. Music and movies need to continue to progress and grow. They’re not inanimate objects. No, they’re things that grow with society and become different with every generation. Us dwelling on the past could be causing us to miss out on the good stuff that’s out there now. And if we want that stuff to come to light and become more popular let’s focus on promoting that, rather than just promoting stuff of old. The movie “Midnight in Paris” illustrates this fairly well. Just portrays how every generation dwells in the past and how it could cause us to miss out on what’s going on now.
